Over the past 450 years, the plays of William Shakespeare have been translated into French. They’ve been adapted for children. They’ve even been acted out by puppets. And in 2009, a new production of The Tempest from the Gaspé region of Quebec charmed audiences by using all three layers of storytelling at the same time.
La Tempête is the beloved story of Prospero and his magic library as re-imagined by the Théâtre de la Petite Marée (Theatre of the Little Tide). This creative young professional company is based in the small, picturesque seaside village of Baie-des-Chaleurs, and specializes in summer family shows, often using fantastical puppets and masks.
For their production of The Tempest, the company commissioned exquisite, life-size marionettes that are manipulated by the actors. The hit show is being revived at the National Arts Centre for three performances this weekend.
Director Alice Ronfard has staged everything from experimental theatre to opera, but this was her first foray into children’s theatre.
“For years I had a project in the back of my mind to initiate young people to Shakespeare,” she says over the phone from her home in Montreal. “My son developed a passion for Shakespeare when he was eight. I was directing a production of King Lear and he and his little friends would sit and watch, completely absorbed, for hours. I was wondering what had gotten into them. I realized that there must be something in those stories that speaks to children.”
A conversation with some of Petite Marée’s creative collaborators eventually led to Ronfard signing on to direct La Tempête.

“We chose The Tempest for this project because I had directed it before, it’s a play I adore, and I felt that it’s about things that children could easily understand: magic, the master-slave relationship, compassion, power,” Ronfard says.
At first she wasn’t too thrilled about working with puppets.
“To me a puppet was like Pinocchio. I thought it would be silly. Then I saw these amazing puppets they created. They’re alive. They’re like human beings. You forget they’re puppets.”
With its beach town location, it’s no surprise that Petite Marée often turns to stories featuring the sea, making The Tempest a natural fit. For this version, Shakespeare’s text has been freely translated and adapted for a young audience by New Brunswick playwright Emma Haché, an associate artist of the NAC French Theatre, which is presenting La Tempête in Ottawa.
“Emma has done an absolutely fabulous adaptation,” says Ronfard. “She has managed to synthesize all the critical plot elements into an hour and 10 minutes, and has lost nothing of the story. I think we’ve succeeded in producing a project that engages the emotions.”

Yana Gupta completes her act with a broken nose

Yana Gupta made her debut into Bollywood with the item number Babuji in Dum (2003) which on to be a rage among cine goers. Later, she also featured in the item song Oh! What A Babe in Rakht (2004) and in a music album of her own. Gupta is better known to the Tamil audience for ‘Kadhal Yaanai’ in Anniyan. She is now-a-days in news once again with the dance reality show ‘Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 4’. She had to undergo an operation for the fracture. Here is what the beautiful 31 year old Czech-born model-actor wrote on her micro-blogging site, “Remember our domestic violence act? Did X-ray finally and my nose is fractured. Surgery on Thursday. I wonder how I managed to dance till the end.”

Sonakshi Sinha made a marvelous debut with ‘Dabangg’ opposite Salman Khan and impressed everyone with her charms and talent. So much so, that veteran actor Kamal Hassan decided to cast her in his next project.
The 56 year old Southern superstar is working on his next project which is based on 2001’s ‘Hannibal’, starring Sir Anthony Hopkins and Julianne Moore. The movie is to be directed by Selvaraghavan and will be made in Tamil. However, the makers have a plan to dub it into Hindi and Telugu as well.

Selvaraghavan is planning to meet Sonakshi soon to discuss the script with her and get her affirmative nod.

Vidya Balan to take legal action against her fake bikini picture

Katrina Kaif and Sonakshi Sinha have earlier been victims of the harassment caused when their morphed pictures went round internet. A few days back, Vidya Balan was shocked to see her morphed bikini clad picture on a website. Though, now it has been clear that the picture was morphed, Vidya has decided not to sit back. The concerned magazine (on whose cover she has apparently been morphed) has been contacted and they have clarified that they have nothing to do with it.

So, Vidya has decided to go ahead with a legal suit if the culprit (who’s behind creating the picture) is pin-pointed or a re-run of such an incident occurs. “She is not going to sit tight if such a thing happens again. We are exploring legal options to stop this malice against actresses of Bollywood,” her spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, Vidya is busy these days with Milan Luthria’s ‘Dirty Picture’ which has Vidya playing a role that’s in sharp contrast to her own image. It is on the life of Silk Smitha, the voluptuous bombshell who rose to fame in the 1980s but died a lonely death after financial crisis, heartbreak, and dependency on alcohol.
“It gives me a chance to portray a real life character, Silk Smitha, a person I don’t really understand and that is an exciting thing for me as an actor. That is a challenge, to portray that person with whom you don’t identify at all,” Vidya said on the opening day of the Indian Film Festival in Melbourne.

Imran Khan was in a fix when he had to shoot a scene in which he was to be seduced by his co-star Soniya Mehra in a bathroom cubicle for Shakun Batra’s ‘Short Term Shaadi’. This was Imran’s first scene of its kind and it took some convincing and explanation from producer Karan Johar and director Batra to prepare him for the scene which was shot on sets.

In the film, Imran plays an obsessive-compulsive architect who wants everything in perfection. In this particular scene, Imran and Soniya’s character meet on a date and Soniya, wearing a short outfit, follows him to the men’s loo, even into the cubicle he is in. She pushes him against the wall, trying to undress him, licking and kissing him at the same time. However, the more she tries to get it on, the more he freaks out. Finally, he turns on the shower, aiming it at her. A drenched Soniya looks at him, stunned.

Thus, the scene which starts with a naughty mood takes a comical ending!!

Koena Mitra plays a bisexual in her first Hollywood project, ‘The Story of Naomi’

Koena Mitra was last in news when she had a milkshake named after her. Since then, the news columns have been missing her as the girl had shifted her base to LA and was hunting hard for a Hollywood project. After putting in a lot of efforts, the girl has started her first Hollywood film, Story of Naomi, being produced by Michael Hirshenson of the When Harry Met Sally fame and directed by the ace fashion photographer Ash Gupta.

The movie has Koena play a bisexual girl who gets attracted to men and women equally. The movie also features actor Kevin Sorbo and Chris Devicchio. The first poster of the film shows Koena getting intimate with another girl.

Producer Hirshenson is all praises for Koena and says, “She looks international and her discipline and hard work can take her places. It all depends on how much she’s ready to learn.”

And it seems, the producer is quite right as this model-turned-actress has worked on her accent and was taking classes for it as the West puts more stress on dubbing and other technicalities.

Deepika Padukone becomes the first ‘Tattoo Queen’ of India

The organisers of the first Tattoo Convention in India have chosen beautiful Deepika Padukone as the ‘Tattoo Queen’ of India. Deepika is already known for sporting the initials of her former boyfriend, Ranbir Kapoor’s initials at the nape of her neack. Later, she modified the tattoo to ‘TMK’.

Also, she sports the ‘Dum Maro Dum’ tattoo on her waistline in the remixed song in the upcoming film Dum Maaro Dum. It was seeing this song that IndiaInk Invention got in touch with her and requested her to visit their first-ever convention which took place here on April 10. Unfortunately, Deepika could not attend the convention as she in London shooting for ‘Desi Boyz’. To make up for her absence, she forwarded the invitation to her Dum Maaro Dum team. Abhishek Bachchan, Prateik and Rohan Sippy attended the convention instead.

The convention’s organiser Manoj Thakur, Partner at Par Excellence Entertainment, said, “Deepika’s absence was felt, especially at an event that she would have readily identified with.

Pooja Batra to be honored by LA Indo-American Advisory Council

Actress Pooja Batra has done quite a few films in Bollywood but unfortunately could not make it big here. She has been missing from the Bollywood scene for quite some time post her marriage to orthopaedic surgeon Sonu Ahluwalia in 2002. After her marriage, she shifted her base to Los Angeles but this Januray, she filed a divorce against her husband.

The latest with Batra is that she is being honored by the LA County Sheriff’s Indo-American Advisory Council for her contribution to the South Asian-American community. She will also host an auction to raise funds for tsunami-hit Japan. The award will be received and the auction will be hosted by her on April 28.
In the business arena too, the actress has some action going on. Her company Glow Bell Inc has associated with a Los Angeles-based casting company to help the latter set up a shop in India.
