The Los Angeles Lakers have reportedly offered Mike Brown $4 million a year as their new head coach. The Los Angeles Timesbroke the story late on May 24 just before midnight. Brown coached Lebron James(notes) on the Cleveland Cavaliers for five years, posting a winning record of 272-138.
Brown became the front runner after interviewing with Jim Buss. Buss was impressed with Brown's defensive style according to the Los Angeles Times story. Brown has also had experience dealing with a superstar in LeBron James. Brown was criticized in James last season for his decision making in the NBA Playoffs before he was let go by the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Are the Lakers rushing into a decision they may regret? There are still plenty of candidates much better than Brown that could be available includingKobe Bryant's(notes)preferred choice, Brian Shaw. Shaw may not have head coaching experience but he did learn at the feet of Phil Jackson while working as Jackson's assistant.
Rick Adelman is another head coach that is available and he is said to be the Lakers head coach if Brown passes. Brown's hiring will not be well received in Lakerland. Brown's name did not pop up until the last couple of days and many Lakers fans reacted with shock when he interviewed for the job.
Twitter was abuzz with negative reactions to the Brown hiring. One post said simply, "Mike Brown isn't a bad coach, but I don't think he's the guy for this Lakers team."
Another reaction sounded a little more reactionary, "If Mike Brown becomes the coach of the Lakers I'm gonna put my head in a microwave and jump off a curb head first."
There have been other fans that have been posting positive reactions to the possible Mike Brown hiring as well. One post in favor of Brown complimented his defense, "Best way to show that Lebron isn't as good as Kobe? Hire his ex head coach & win a championship with him. I'm with it for Mike Brown."
If Brown is hired it will be a wait and see attitude for many Lakers fans but if the Lakers get out of the box slowly there will be a firestorm of criticism directed at the Lakers front office and Jim Buss. Brown may be a top ten coach available for the Lakers but he is not the right man at the right time for the this team.
If Brown and Kobe Bryant have not talked before this offer has been made, it will be a bumpy season in the beginning until Brown can win over Kobe. Bryant has been a player that will hold a grudge and when he does not like a coach it is obvious by watching his body language. If Brown is hired by Jim Buss it will be considered a statement against Kobe Bryant and Phil Jackson.
